SHOW DESCRIPTION

Here at GYST podcast, we love to explore different cultures. Heck, every single person in this podcast is from a different culture! But, if you dig deep down, what exactly is culture? How do you define culture?

There is no easy way to define culture as you can see in everything. We often associate culture with religion, but in fact, there’s a whole world out there where we don’t see it as a culture. In today’s episode, Rohit asks us a very important question to define culture within ourselves what can you do to enrich your life? And, what are the finer things in life?

In Kamal’s eyes, culture is about the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music, and arts. It’s the deeper meaning of passing knowledge from generation to generation. It’s about gaining the knowledge on how information and stories were being passed to different generations through plays, symphonies, movies and etc.

What’s interesting about culture is that there’s no specific way to define culture. Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist believes “Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things.”

Culture can be defined in million ways. We are no experts, but what we can say is that a good way to sum up culture is by experiencing experiences that are not in your norm and being outside your comfort zone, but growing yourself by understanding each other.

The only way you are going to experience it is by going outside your comfort zone. So get out there, define what culture is to YOU, explore, and GET YOUR SH*T TOGETHER!

072: Financial Stability

SHOW DESCRIPTION

Ever wondered how come your savings account isn’t growing? Or how you are always living from paycheck to paycheck? In today’s podcast, Rohit Rohilia, Kyle Reed, Samnang Tea, and Kamal Kalra talk about how your lifestyle tells you whether you are poor or broke.

Poor is unconditional or you were born into it. Broke is when you are in a mindset of being broke which is caused by yourself or a situation. People are often broke rather than poor and they are in this state because they are in the mentality of spending money or spending money to impress other people. This gets you in a situation where you are constantly living in a world where the money comes in, money goes out.

Experts suggest we live by the 70-10-10-10 rule where 70% of your paycheck goes to living expenses, 10% of your paycheck goes to charity. 10% goes to short term investment and last 10% goes to long-term investment. Start treating all the 10% are already gone, because once you get into that mentality you will stop thinking about that money which is essentially helping you grow and invest in yourself. Once you get into this mentality, it shifts your priority which limits your spending.

Here are some other tips that will help you get into that mentality:

  • Whenever you are at a store and they ask you for donation; get excited and say yes! Give a $1 or $2, but if you start giving charity, not only you will feel good about it, but you will be making other people happy. This alone is a huge investment in yourself.
  • Start by 10-10-10 rule where you start by putting 10% of your paycheck to long-term, short-term investment, and charity and then use the 70% of your paycheck for your living expense. This will help you realize your expenses which you can prioritize.
  • Save your direct deposit to savings and then transfer it to checking to pay bills. This way you are conscious of how much money you are transferring from your savings to checkings which will help you realize how much are you spending.

Lastly, ask your yourself before buying anything does it add value to you or your closed ones? If no, then do you really want it or need it?

071: Procrastination

071: Procrastination

by Amit Bhardwaj, Kyle Reed, Rohit Rohila, Sam Tea, Aaron Eeide

SHOW DESCRIPTION

Simple error in Judgement. We all make it and then regret it right afterward. If you really dig deep, you can find things in your past which has affected all because of simple error in judgement. One place that we will always find is in Procrastination.

Ignorance is bliss. If you are not properly educated on something then you will make all the excuses to get away from doing it. People make elaborate reasons to get out of doing things because we want to maintain a good image of ourselves so we will blame external excuses to justify the procrastination. We have a mindset where we make ourselves believe that It’s so easy to do then why do it now? So we put things off until the last minute because we always feel like we have a lot of time since it’s an easy task until it’s time to get it done. It’s easy to do something, but it’s easier to avoid and do something else. We are lazy so it’s easier to find something not to do than to actually do it.

Another reason why we procrastinate is because once we are done with the task, then what? What’s there to do afterward? Our human nature is to keep doing things and when we don’t have something to do we go crazy. So we procrastinate to make sure that we are occupied. If you don’t have anything to do, then stare at a wall for 5 mins and you will find something to do. Humans have a fear of nothing to do and of no purpose so we will keep pushing things off to give ourselves a purpose.

So what can we do to not procrastinate? Make a master list! An amazing book “if you haven’t gotten time to do it right when will you find the time to do it over” by Jeffrey Mayor points out that first of all make a master list of things to do on a piece of paper. We get so bogged down by planning out how to complete a task, but we never end up doing it because we give priority to wrong things. He suggests making a master list which has all your tasks no matter how small or big it is. Then, when you are completing the task, don’t just put a check against it; cross it off. Take your pen, scribble it, and cross it off the list. This will give you a satisfaction of completing a task which will enable you to complete more tasks in future.

Another thing you can do to identify your procrastination is take the test that is called out in the book “Break the procrastination now” by Knaus. This test will identify your procrastination and then you will have the opportunity to do exercises to improve not procrastinating.

by Amit Bhardwaj, Kamal Kalra, Kyle Reed, Rohit Rohila

SHOW DESCRIPTION

We all have things that bothers us most, but most times they are just small little things that’s so important to us, but might not be to others. Little things big headaches. That might be best way to describe pet peeves. So, how do we recognize our pet peeves?

Pet Peeves are very specific things that bothers us the most which might not mean anything to others. `It’s challenging to point out behaviors in yourself, but it can be easy by evaluating what are your pet peeves. Behaviors are easier to see and analyze, but a lot of times on a day to day basis we don’t think about how it might affect other people or you don’t think enough about it so it doesn’t play a huge role anymore. One of the way to improve yourself is hold up a mirror. A lot of things that a behavior is annoying you is in yourself and the anger is really directed toward yourself. List all your pet peeves and that should give you a good indication about yourself that you need to fix.

Another way to recognize your pet peeves is to ask yourself: are you right? A lot of times a pet peeve of yours is because you think your way is the best way, but for others it might be the right way. There is not only one way of doing things. So, ask yourself are your pet peeves reflecting in yourself?
