Discovering Roslyn and Embracing Solitude by the Yakima River

During Memorial Day Weekend in 2016, I decided to get in my car and drive without any direction, without any destination, without any plans. I called it my Solo No-Plan Road Trip. That weekend became all about discovering a new version of myself.

I challenged the GYSTPodcast Crew to the same challenge and the adventures each of us had was amazing.

For me, the highlight came when I drove in a random direction and ended up in one of Washington State’s smallest towns, Roslyn, and strangely enough ran into my cousin and his girlfriend.

Another highlight was when I found myself on an isolated road overlooking the Yakima River. I got out of my car and stood there for 20 minutes enjoying the solitude. Not a single car came by. I decided to scream aloud and found that to be so freeing.

I recommend this same solo trip to anyone!

A Southbound Detour through Kalama and Beyond

My planned drive down Route 101 took an unexpected turn when I missed the exit, prompting me to impulsively head south on I-5. Kalama, a town I’d passed countless times without exploring, became my first stop, revealing its charming beach, McMenamins, and inviting local spots. Continuing south, I stumbled upon a giant nursery, a lively farmers market, and a serene nature reserve, with Salem providing a picturesque river park for exploration. On the way back, I did an unplanned meet-up with online friends and seized the opportunity to savor dinner at the burger place I’d passed earlier, adding a flavorful finale to a day filled with unexpected discoveries and delightful surprises.

A Road Trip Tale from Port Townsend to Astoria

Embarking on a solo journey from Port Townsend after attending a wedding, I began my adventure by mistakenly chasing the sunrise in the wrong direction. The quiet morning led me to explore the outskirts of the town before hitting the 101. In Sequim, I fueled up on coffee from Rainshadow Cafe and meandered through Port Angeles, captivated by its pier and the grandeur of Crescent Lake.

Venturing through Forks, a traffic jam prompted an unplanned detour onto an unnamed logging road, eventually leading me to Ocean Shores, where a surprising encounter with a friend brought a delightful pit stop. After an ill-prepared scooter ride on the beach, I sought warmth at Quinault Beach Casino, losing $80 in the process. Chasing the sunset along the Willapa River, my journey culminated in Astoria, where, despite the fading light, I found solace in Gizmo’s Arcade, indulging in childhood games and a Foo Fighters pinball machine before heading home.

Donuts, Coffee, and Reflections on the Open Road

During my trip, I drove through southern Washington and ended up in Oregon. Along the way, I stopped for donuts, visited a Mt. St. Helens Visitor Center, stopped at an Oregon farmers market and bought some coffee, and lost $25 at a casino (after I was initially up $20). For me, it was really about the driving, having the time to sit with my own thoughts and listen to music that transports me to special moments in my life.

A Road Trip Odyssey from Chandler to Tacoma

I flew out to Chandler AZ for a business trip. After business concluded, I decided to take my solo drive from the office there since it was somewhere I had never been and everything would be new for me. I rented a car and drove west Chandler on HWY 60. I drove through most of the night until the darkness of the road started getting to me. I decided to take a nap and got a visit from a HWY patrol officer who decided to check on me. I went back to sleep, woke up the next morning, and drove to San Diego. From San Diego I got on I10 and went north to Los Angeles where I got on a flight from John Wayne Intl and came home to Tacoma
